随着人们对室内装饰的美观和舒适的追求，软体沙发，床垫，软包装饰等软体家具的普及使用导致建筑物火灾风险大幅提高。由于泡沫材料如聚氨酯是作为软体家具的常见主体成分，其易燃性使得床垫一旦被引燃，火势就会迅速发展，而且很难被彻底扑灭。当火场存在未经阻燃处理的软体家具时，很可能就由小火源如火柴，香烟演变成轰燃(火灾形成)。所以床垫的阻燃性能是各国/地区重点关注的消防问题。
